Forums: Index > Watercooler > Using books as references

It's often quite useful to add a relevant quote from a novel to an article. Is there a standard style for adding references to the novels? I'm in favour of making references also be links to the articles for the specific novel, but there are also refs which include book number and the name of the series, which could also be links. See Chet Morton for a few different examples of style. Paulhassett 10:32, 15 July 2008 (UTC)

This how I usually do it, series name (e.g. Casefiles), book number (e.g. #3), book title in Italic text with link to book article (Cult of Crime), then year the book was first published in bracketes (e.g (1987)), and if known the page number (e.g. , page two).
Example:
Insert <ref>The Hardy Boys #1 ''[[The Tower Treasure (original)|The Tower Treasure]]'' (1927), page 25</ref> following the satement you wish to reference and you will get [1], which on the referance list will look like this:
  1. The Hardy Boys #1 The Tower Treasure (1927), page 25
Hope that helps,</clear>WHLfan (talk/contribs) 21:23, 15 July 2008 (UTC)
Okay, thanks. Is the year of publication only included as a disambiguation thing? i.e. should it only be included for revised editions and their originals, or is it relevant for all books? Also, should series names be linked too? Or is that a link too far?

Sorry Paul - I didn't see your post until just now. Is the year of publication only included as a disambiguation thing? You can use it for all books, but it is only really needed with revised and original books.
Also, should series names be linked too? Or is that a link too far? Yes, it is best if you do but just link to the series once in in ref list.
Example:

[1] [2]

  1. The Hardy Boys #1 The Tower Treasure (1927), page 25
  2. The Hardy Boys #1 The Tower Treasure (1927), page 101
BTW, I'm planning to expend the Manual of Style and create a Layout Guide, which will cover all these things. In the mean time continue to ask as many questions as you like. Also if you have any suggestions let me know. I really appreciate all your work here on the wiki and wanting to make sure that it fits with our guidelines.
Thanks again
